Schools and colleges are the primary institutions that instill academic skills in you. Though some knowledge from the school and college days can be applied later when you start working, in reality there are many more career skills that you are unaware of.

Schools do not teach you how to get a promotion, how to handle responsibilities or even basic problem solving skills. You need practical knowledge to achieve these career skills. In truth, the real world is the total opposite of what you might have imagined and you would understand it only once you reach there. So, here are 5 essential career skills they don’t teach you in school.

1. Handling responsibility

Responsibility is certainly not a skill you learn at school. You might have taken up few responsibilities like being the class monitor or school leader or maybe the magazine editor. But, the responsibilities about which we are talking here is much beyond that. You will be responsible for projects, meetings, team work and deals that affect others and your business. So, you learn the real skill of being accountable only once you start working.

2. Networking

Networking skills are vital as far as today’s job scenarios are concerned. Only those who have a strong network of acquaintances can survive in this competitive world. And no one teaches you such skills in schools. Though today’s kids are more interested in social media platforms, schools do not encourage it beyond a point. When you start working, social relations matter a lot for getting a new job, recommendations, to reach key people at conferences and meetings, to solve problems and even to communicate with more successful people.

3. Problem solving

What students don’t learn from schools is problem-solving skills. Although they are taught to solve problems with creative approaches, that does not go beyond math problems. The ability to think from different angles and act swiftly is an essential tool required at work and mostly you will learn it from experience.
