Workplaces house managers of all types. They can either be considerate, empathetic and supportive or manipulative and menacing. Read on to find out the signs of a manipulative manager and discern if your own manager at work is manipulative or not.

1. Your manager talks behind the back of other employees in front of you

Don’t gloat if your manager rushes up to you and talks behind the back of other employees. It clearly means that he could also be gossiping about you behind your back to others. He may also be deliberately gossiping about other employees with you to bias you against them. Unless your manager is your best childhood buddy, he is not likely to gossip about others with you.

2. Your manager compliments you even when you haven’t done anything substantial

It is natural to feel good when you are praised by your manager for having done a good job on a project or for clinching a difficult deal. But when your manager compliments you without any reason, you may want to think before taking the praise to your heart. He may be complimenting you to get a favor out of you sometime soon or to create a soft spot in your heart for him so that he can take advantage of it later.

3. Your manager tells you something and asks you to keep it confidential

Office gossip and other so-called confidential information amongst employees never really remains a secret and any efficient manager is likely to know this very well. So if your manager tells you something that he asks you to keep confidential, chances are that he could be manipulating you. Confidential stuff is supposed to remain confidential and not be told to anyone except who is supposed to know about it.
